Stuck ≠ Failing: Your CEO Playbook for the Messy Middle
Every entrepreneur eventually hits a season where everything that used to work suddenly… doesn’t. What once felt clear now feels confusing. What once felt easy now feels clunky. What once created growth now barely moves the needle. You’re working just as hard—but the results aren’t matching the effort.
This is the messy middle. And while it feels uncomfortable, heavy, and sometimes downright discouraging, it’s not a signal that you’re failing. It’s a signal that you’re evolving.
The messy middle is what happens when the business you built and the leader you’ve been are asking to grow into their next version. You’re bumping up against the edge of an old identity, old strategies, and old thinking—while the world, your clients, and your own values continue to shift.
Here’s how to navigate that season with steadiness and clarity.
Normalize the Mess
The messy middle feels so frustrating because your mind interprets it as a problem… when in reality, it’s a normal and expected part of growth. Business is never static. The market changes. Your clients change. Your team changes. You change. And periods of discomfort are often the doorway into your next level.
Instead of resisting it or judging yourself for feeling lost, acknowledge what’s true: you’re in a transition. This isn’t permanent. And it isn’t something you’ve done wrong.
Lead Your Mind First
Before you try to fix anything in your business, steady yourself. Your emotional state sets the tone for your team, your decisions, and your ability to see clearly.
Remind yourself:
This season won’t last forever, and something good is forming beneath the surface—even if I can’t see it yet.
Grounding yourself interrupts the urgency spiral and opens space for actual clarity.
Reconnect With Your Why
When everything feels off, it’s easy to slip into frustration or doubt. Returning to your deeper purpose brings you back to center.
Why does this business exist?
Who are you here to serve?
What impact still matters to you?
Purpose creates perspective. And perspective keeps you moving forward instead of spiraling inward.
Clarify What You Want
Stuckness often comes from reactivity. Instead of jumping from fire to fire, pause and ask:
“What outcome do I actually want here?”
When you define the desired direction—and identify the real obstacle in the way—you transform the messy middle from a fog into something solvable.
A little time in stillness, with a notebook and zero distractions, can change everything.
Bring in Fresh Eyes
If the messy middle is showing up, something in your approach needs to evolve. New insight often accelerates that process.
You might talk to a trusted mentor, reconnect with your customers to understand how their needs have shifted, or bring in someone who can see what you can’t. Fresh perspective breaks patterns you may not realize you’re repeating.
Lean on Community
Entrepreneurship can feel isolating—especially in hard seasons. Surrounding yourself with other women who are navigating growth reminds you that you’re not alone, and you’re not behind. Support, honesty, and shared experience shorten the messy middle more than any strategy ever could.
If you’re in this season now, take heart. Nothing is wrong. Something is unfolding. You’re being invited to your next level of clarity, capacity, and leadership.
To support you through this transition, we created a journaling worksheet to help you identify what you want, what’s in the way, and what your next aligned step is.
